Test drive and opinion on the 2021 Porsche 911 Targa 4S

Targa. The name comes from the most legendary car race, the Targa Florio, won eleven times by Porsche. It is also the name of one of the oldest variants of the iconic 911: the 911 Targa. The concept is simple: offering a removable hardtop to provide all the advantages of a cabriolet in good weather, and all those of a coupé in bad weather. Its iconic fixed roll-over bar has been a giant step forward in terms of safety for convertibles as soon as it appeared. Thus, the 911 Targa has always been the 911 with absolute versatility, and it’s not the 911 Targa Type 992, which has just been released, that will contradict this fact. Porsche Québec, your Porsche dealerof choice in the Quebec City area, gives you its opinion following a test drive of the most accomplished of them all: the 2021 Porsche 911 Targa 4S!

Design: a classic line with an undeniable modern edge

Porche’s Targa design has been a pure masterpiece since the 1960s. However, with such longevity, one would think that it will end up boring car enthusiasts, to which we also belong. And yet, when you see our Porsche sporty cabriolet in the parking lot of the brand's Quebec City dealership, the magic works once again, as it has for every generation! Rounded headlights at the end of the front fenders, iconic silver-grey roll-over bar and the large fast-back rear window: our 2021 911 Targa 4S impressed us at the very first glance!!

As for the rear light strip across the stern, the Chalk color of the body combined with the red removable roof, and the Turbo wheels of our model, they only added to its charm, to make it simply irresistible. Hence, you can already imagine what we think of the exterior design of the 2021 Porsche 911 Targa 4S: we're under the spell, even before our test drive!!

Mechanics: capabilities that are, on paper, way beyond the norm

Our 2021 Porsche 911 Targa 4S was not to be outdone either specifications-wise. Indeed, it was powered by nothing less than a turbocharged 3.0-litre flat-six engine producing 443 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. Available with either a manual or a PDK transmission, this engine transfers, according to Porsche Canada, all the power to the four-wheel-drive system. Therefore, the capabilities of the 911 Targa 4S Type 992 are usable in all conditions, and are above all very high. Indeed, the Canadian branch of the automaker announces a 0–100 km/h sprinted in just 3.6 seconds with the PDK transmission and the Sport Chrono Package. As for the top speed, it is established at 304 km/h.!

In our case, we had a 2021 911 Targa 4S equipped with the PDK transmission and the Sport Chrono Package, the most athletic configuration available. It was also equipped with rear axle steering, which is supposed to increase agility at low speeds and stability at high speeds, and with the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control option, which reduces the amount of body roll, among other things. So, on paper, our model offered the best in terms of sportiness in the current Targa range. Impressive, but to be confirmed once on the move between Lévis, Quebec City and Ste-Foy.!

Interior: a driver's cockpit dedicated to driving, but very luxurious.

It was time for us to take place inside our stunning 2021 911 Targa 4S. However, we did not start it right away. Indeed, we first took a few minutes to admire the interior. It offered a classic and horizontal dashboard with a very clean design, joined in the middle by the ascending central console. Hence, all the controls were within easy reach, a real treat!!

However, it was the upholstery that really captivated us the most. We had an Exclusive Manufaktur leather interior in Bordeaux Red/Chalk, which extended the theme of exterior colors into the interior. This was the final touch that seduced us. In terms of equipment, nothing was missing either. 18-way power adjustable front seats, night vision assist system, intelligent cruise control, Burmester sound system: everything was present, and it was only the best!!

Therefore, we had everything we could dream of to carry out our test drive in the best conditions near Quebec City!!

On the road: a pure delight in terms of handling and driving pleasure

Here comes the long-awaited moment, the 911 Targa test! We start the flat-six behind us, and its typical rumble is soon heard. We also take advantage of the opportunity to retract the hardtop and look at the kinematics of its folding from the outside. Hypnotizing! After these first steps, we set off on this beautiful sunny autumn day.!

So we leave the Porsche Québec parking lot and start on Cyrille-Duquet street. First observation: if the comfort is firm, it is by no means unpleasant! The defects of the road are all fully filtered and this, without shaking us inside. We now head towards the 440 to get on it. Even if it is a true grand tourer, the 2021 911 Targa 4S is still a real sports car; the left turn preceding the insertion lane on the highway shows a disconcerting agility in curves at moderate speed, thanks to the rear axle steering that turns the latter in the opposite direction of the front axle for more maneuverability!!

We are now accelerating into the 440. As soon as we step on the throttle, the sporty Porsche cabriolet jumps forward with force, confirming the figures given by the manufacturer. Arriving on the Charest Highway, we validate this impression by overtaking two other vehicles in succession in the La Suette sector. It rather felt like teleportation: each vehicle that was first in front of us was already behind in a blink of an eye once we overtook it! Arriving near Champigny, we test the stability of the vehicle at a higher speed with a fast turn: our Porsche sports convertible of the day is glued to the road and there’s absolutely no body roll. Astonishing!!

We exit near St-Augustin-de-Desmaures, not far from the Fossambault road, to already turn around towards Quebec City. Surprisingly, a heavy fall rain started to fall! In a hurry, we closed the top, and started driving in the opposite direction. During all our way back to the dealership, not once was the 2021 911 Targa 4S caught off guard; the standard Porsche all-wheel drive kept a close eye on the road by literally sticking the sporty Teutonic machine to the asphalt.!
